What it is for in figure painting
- General shading – metal, leather, wood and dark clothing.
- Picking out detail – the ink runs into grooves and seams by itself.

What to pair it with
Apply over finished, dry paint. Thin it with Glaze Medium for a softer effect, or combine it with coloured inks for tinted shadows.
Frequently asked questions
Sooty Black or Carbon Black?
Sooty Black is softer and greyer; Carbon Black is harder and deeper. For most shading Sooty is the better choice – a pure black ink tends to be too harsh on a figure.
How do I avoid ink tidemarks?
Only apply it where it belongs and lift the excess from raised areas at once with a clean damp brush. On large areas thin it with Glaze Medium.
How do I thin it?
With water or an AK thinner. A few drops are enough for brush work; airbrushing needs more – AK thinners and cleaners are made for that. With acrylics, two thin coats always beat one thick one.
Is the finish really matt?
Yes, the 3rd Generation range dries matt. To protect the figure or even out the sheen, seal it with a matt varnish at the end.
