Thinning acrylic with water is the easiest thing in the world and also the quickest way to ruin a coat: water dilutes the binder as well, the paint loses cohesion and what is left on the model is patchy and gritty. Flow Medium does the same thinning but keeps the binder in the mix. The paint stays smooth and holds together even in a genuinely thin layer. For the airbrush the maker gives a ratio of three parts medium to one part paint.
