100 g core soap with a re-fatting effect. Cleans paint out of sable and synthetic brushes and keeps the hair supple. Made in Germany.

da Vinci Series 4033 core soap for cleaning and caring for brushes, 100 g. This is not ordinary soap – it has a re-fatting effect. Ordinary soap or detergent will wash the paint out, but it also strips the natural oils from the hair, which then hardens and eventually snaps. This soap replaces those oils with every wash, so the hair stays supple.

It works on natural hair, bristle and synthetic fibre alike – on your whole brush jar, not only on sable.

How to use it

  • Acrylics and water-based paints – Wash out with water and soap while the paint is still wet. That is the whole trick: acrylic dried at the ferrule cannot be removed.
  • Solvent-based paints – Clean with thinner first, then wash with soap and water.
  • Always finish – Reshape the point with your fingers and let the brush dry thoroughly, flat or tip-down. Never store it standing in water.

Why this matters for miniatures

Miniature painters thin their paint and work in thin layers, which means paint travels further up towards the ferrule than in ordinary painting. And that is exactly where a brush dies: paint dried between the hairs at the ferrule splays the point, and that cannot be undone.

One Kolinsky brush from Series 10 or Series 35 costs many times what this soap does, and with regular care it lasts years instead of months. On micro brushes it counts twice over – there, dried paint at the ferrule is immediately terminal.

FAQ

Is plain water or ordinary soap not enough?
Water will not remove paint that has worked its way down to the ferrule. Ordinary soap or detergent will, but it degreases the hair as well – natural hair then hardens and snaps, and synthetic loses its spring. This soap re-fats as it cleans, so that does not happen.

Can it be used on synthetic brushes?
Yes. da Vinci specifies it for natural hair, bristle and synthetic fibre. Synthetic does not harden the way sable does, but dried paint damages it just the same.

Will it rescue a brush that is already ruined?
No. This is maintenance, not repair. Acrylic dried at the ferrule splays the hair irreversibly and no soap brings it back. That is why you wash as you go, not once there is a problem.

How long does 100 g last?
Years of ordinary hobby painting. One wash uses a trace – you simply draw the brush lightly across the surface of the bar.

Will soap stay in the brush?
Not if you rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water afterwards. Some painters deliberately leave a little soap in the tip so the hair holds its shape while drying – in that case, rinse it out again before the next use.
