Synthetic filbert, 10.0 mm fibre, 3.0 mm wide. Even coverage and soft blends with no hard stroke edge. Made in Germany.

Size 0 of the NOVA Series 1375 is the smallest filbert – soft transitions on faces and small areas. It is a filbert – a flat brush with a rounded end. It has none of the corners of a classic flat and none of the point of a round; it combines both: even coverage, and no hard edge where the stroke ends.

The fibre measures 10.0 mm across 3.0 mm. It is the same extra-fine gold-coloured synthetic used in the round NOVA Series 1570 – only the shape differs.

What it does on a miniature

  • Soft transitions – 10.0 mm of fibre across 3.0 mm. The rounded end has no corners, so a stroke leaves no hard edge – the transition fades out on its own.
  • Faces and skin – Cheeks, forehead, neck. Where a round brush leaves a mark and a flat leaves a sharp edge, a filbert settles onto the curve.
  • Base layers on smaller areas – Hands, helmet, boots. Even coverage without visible strokes.

Why a filbert rather than a round or a flat?

It comes down to the shape of the end, and to what a stroke leaves behind.

A round brush (the NOVA 1570, for instance) ends in a point. It is precise, but covering an area with it leaves visible strokes, because paint is laid down unevenly from the middle out.

A flat brush covers evenly, but it has two sharp corners. Wherever the stroke ends, a hard edge stays behind – which, on a face or a cloak, is exactly what you do not want.

A filbert is flat with a rounded end. No corners, so the stroke fades out; and it has width, so it covers in one pass. On curved surfaces – a face, a shoulder, a helmet – it settles onto the shape rather than paving over it.

At this price it is a brush worth owning even if you do not reach for it every evening. It uses the same fibre as the Series 1570, so it handles metallics, washes and technical paints too.

FAQ

What is a filbert and what is it for on a miniature?
A flat brush with a rounded end. On figures it is used for soft transitions and even base layers, above all on curved surfaces like a face, a shoulder or a cloak. It leaves no hard edge where the stroke ends.

How does it differ from the NOVA Series 1570?
The fibre is identical – extra-fine gold synthetic, same green handle, same silver ferrule. Series 1570 is round, this one is a filbert. Round for detail and lines, filbert for areas and blends.

Why does da Vinci not list it as a miniature brush?
Because it is catalogued as a utility brush (bodypainting, facepainting, modelling). That is not a drawback – it is an ordinary filbert in the same fibre as the other NOVA brushes, simply not marketed at figure painters. Painters use it for exactly what a filbert is good at.

Size 0 or size 1?
They carry the same fibre length (10.0 mm) and differ only in width – 3.0 mm against 3.5 mm. The gap is small; if you are buying one, take the size 1.

How do I look after it?
Paint must never dry in the ferrule. Wash with lukewarm water and brush soap after painting and dry it flat. Avoid hot water, which deforms synthetic fibre permanently.
