A liquid medium with two uses. The first is in the name: it extends the open time of acrylic paint so it can be worked longer. The second is antiquing – the medium is laid on the surface and then worked into with paint, or the excess is dragged off, giving the uneven soiling an old object carries. On figures and models it is a way to put dirt into a surface without leaving a hard edge behind.

Frequently asked questions
How does it differ from the gel retarder?
This medium is liquid, so it thins the paint slightly as well, and it is built for antiquing on top of that. The gel retarder leaves consistency untouched and only slows drying.
How is antiquing done?
The medium is laid on the surface, a darker colour is worked into it and the excess dragged off with a cloth or a dry brush. The result is uneven, which is the point.
How much goes into the paint?
For drying time alone, a small amount is enough. Too much retarder leaves the layer tacky for a long time and weakens coverage.
