A medium with three jobs that turn out to be more related than they look. On its own it is a light sealer – used before painting, staining or varnishing, or as a barrier coat between two layers of paint so they do not dissolve into each other. Mixed into a base colour it seals as you basecoat. And mixed with paint in the majority it becomes a glazing medium: the colour turns transparent and can be used to glaze, tint and build depth in layers.

Frequently asked questions
Is it a varnish?
No. It is a medium – it can act as a light sealer or barrier coat, but the final protection of a model should come from a proper varnish.
What is a barrier coat for?
To stop the layer underneath softening when the next one goes on. It is useful in techniques where paint is dragged or wiped back and the lower layer would otherwise be damaged.
How is a glaze made with it?
Mix it with paint so the medium is in clear majority. The more medium, the more transparent the glaze and the more layers needed – but the finer the result.
