Smoke Black from the AK 3rd Generation range – a smoky grey-black for soot, exhausts and burn effects. Matt acrylic.

Smoke Black is a dark black with a faint grey-brown cast – the colour of smoke and soot rather than of pure black. It works mostly as an effect: muzzle staining, sooted exhausts and the ground around fires.

What it is for in figure painting

What to pair it with

Apply it thinned as a glaze or with a drybrush. Shade with Carbon Black and finish soot with black pigment and a light drybrush.

Frequently asked questions

How do I paint muzzle staining?
With a very thin Smoke Black glaze running back from the muzzle, built up in passes. A hard black smudge reads as a mistake, not as soot.

Smoke Black or Carbon Black?
Smoke Black is lighter and greyer; Carbon Black is deeper and cleaner. Smoke for effects, Carbon for genuinely black surfaces.

How do I thin it?
With water or an AK thinner. A few drops are enough for brush work; airbrushing needs more – AK thinners and cleaners are made for that. With acrylics, two thin coats always beat one thick one.

Is the finish really matt?
Yes, the 3rd Generation range dries matt. To protect the figure or even out the sheen, seal it with a matt varnish at the end.
