What it is for in figure painting

  • Parched earth – cracked mud and desert pans on bases.
  • Old paintwork – flaking paint on wood and metal.
  • Terrain texture – a key for pigments and drybrushing.
  • Dioramas – dry riverbeds and crumbling surfaces.

What to pair it with

Apply it over a dry base; the thickness of the layer sets the size of the cracks. Once dry, pick out the cracks with a dark glaze and drybrush the plates with Pale Sand.

How do I control the size of the cracks?
With the thickness of the layer. A thick coat gives large plates and wide fissures, a thin one a fine network. It is worth testing on a scrap of card first.

Can I paint over the cracked surface?
Yes, with any acrylic once it is fully dry. Do not lay it on thickly, though – that fills the cracks the whole effect depends on.

How do I thin it?
With water or an AK thinner. A few drops are enough for brush work; airbrushing needs more – AK thinners and cleaners are made for that. With acrylics, two thin coats always beat one thick one.

Is the finish really matt?
Yes, the 3rd Generation range dries matt. To protect the figure or even out the sheen, seal it with a matt varnish at the end.
