Size 1 of the NOVA Series 1875 is the middle one of three small long-handled filberts. Gold-coloured synthetic fibre, 10.0 mm long and 3.0 mm wide, 292 mm overall. The green lacquered handle is the same as on the other NOVA brushes, just more than ten centimetres longer.
To be straight with you: da Vinci publishes the same measurements for sizes 0 and 1. The difference between them is small in practice, and if you want one brush for work that calls for this shape and a long handle, either will do. The 1 is a sensible middle choice between the 0 and the 2.

When you paint a 28 mm figure in your hand, a long handle tends to get in the way – the end of the brush catches on your forearm or the desk. That is what the short NOVA 1375 size 1 is for, with the same fibre and shape.
Series 1875 is for painters who work on busts on a stand, dioramas, vehicles and terrain, or who paint standing up. And for painters who have got used to holding the brush further from the tip because their hand works more loosely that way and the stroke comes out softer.
Is NOVA 1875 suitable for miniatures?
Yes, for larger scales and terrain. The fibre, shape and ferrule are the same as on Series 1375, which miniature painters use routinely – the only difference is the length of the handle.
Why does size 1 have the same measurements as size 0?
That is how the manufacturer lists them: 10.0 mm fibre and 3.0 mm width for both. Hand-made brushes vary slightly from piece to piece and the da Vinci table gives average values. For a noticeably wider stroke, take size 2.
Can I paint with oils?
Yes – da Vinci designs it for oil and acrylic. With oils, clean it in thinner first and then with soap; with acrylics, water and soap are enough.
How do I look after it?
Wash it in lukewarm water with 4033 brush soap after every session, reshape the tip and dry it flat. Hot water deforms synthetic fibre for good.
