English Grey from the AK 3rd Generation range – a cool mid grey for British vehicles, stone bases and grey uniforms. Matt acrylic.

English Grey is a mid-dark cool grey with a slight blue cast – a shade developed for British military vehicles that ends up being used far more widely on figures. It is dark enough to work as a base coat and neutral enough to be pushed in any direction.

What it is for in figure painting

  • British vehicles and gear – a base coat for WWII vehicles, helmets and metal equipment.
  • Stone bases – thinned down and drybrushed it gives believable granite or paving without reading as blue.
  • Grey uniforms – as the mid tone between a black base and a lighter highlight.
  • Knocking back loud colours – a few drops pull an over-saturated blue or green back to something realistic.

What to pair it with

For shadows it mixes well with Dark Grey and black; for highlights use Neutral Grey and Pale Grey. For a warmer grey, add a drop of Beige.

Frequently asked questions

Is English Grey blue or grey?
It is a grey with a cool, slightly blue undertone. Next to Neutral Grey it looks cooler; next to a true blue it clearly reads as grey.

Does it suit 28 mm figures?
Yes. Over large areas it is dark enough as a base; on small figures most painters use it as the mid tone and highlight up with a lighter grey.

How do I thin it?
With water or an AK thinner. A few drops are enough for brush work; airbrushing needs more – AK thinners and cleaners are made for that. With acrylics, two thin coats always beat one thick one.

Is the finish really matt?
Yes, the 3rd Generation range dries matt. To protect the figure or even out the sheen, seal it with a matt varnish at the end.
