What it is for in figure painting
- Ship hulls – below-waterline areas on model kits.

What to pair it with
Shade with Black Red or a dark brown; highlight with Burnt Red and Medium Rust. With Dark Rust it makes a natural pair for rusted surfaces.
Frequently asked questions
Why is Hull Red a good rust base?
Because it is dark and brownish – rust builds naturally on top of it. Lay Medium Rust and Light Rust over it and the result has depth one rust colour cannot give.
Can it be used as a clothing colour?
Yes, on coarse and aged fabrics. For bright clothing it is far too muted.
How do I thin it?
With water or an AK thinner. A few drops are enough for brush work; airbrushing needs more – AK thinners and cleaners are made for that. With acrylics, two thin coats always beat one thick one.
Is the finish really matt?
Yes, the 3rd Generation range dries matt. To protect the figure or even out the sheen, seal it with a matt varnish at the end.
