Pearl is not a conventional metal but a pearlescent metallic with an iridescent sheen. It covers poorly on its own – which is the point: it goes on as a translucent top layer that lends the colour beneath a soft pearl shimmer.

What it is for in figure painting

What to pair it with
Apply it as a top layer over finished paint – best over Pale Blue, Lilac or Pastel Pink. A drop of Silver gives it more strength.
Frequently asked questions
Why doesn't Pearl cover?
Because it isn't meant to. It is a pearlescent layer rather than an opaque paint – the effect comes from the base showing through.
What base shows Pearl off best?
Light pastel shades and black. Over mid grey the effect almost disappears.
How do I thin it?
With water or an AK thinner. A few drops are enough for brush work; airbrushing needs more – AK thinners and cleaners are made for that. With acrylics, two thin coats always beat one thick one.
Is the finish really matt?
Yes, the 3rd Generation range dries matt. To protect the figure or even out the sheen, seal it with a matt varnish at the end.
