What it is for in figure painting
- Shading purple areas – the folds of cloaks and robes.
- Cool shadows – on grey, white and blue, where a shadow should keep colour.

What to pair it with
Apply over finished, dry paint. Combine with Sooty Black for deeper shadows and with Glaze Medium for softer, more controlled glazes.
Frequently asked questions
How is an ink different from ordinary paint?
An ink is far thinner and more transparent – it does not build a layer but tints the surface and pulls into recesses. For shading it is much faster than brushing each shadow.
Why did my ink dry with tidemarks?
On a large smooth surface it dries unevenly. The fix is to thin it with Glaze Medium and build several thin passes instead of one.
How do I thin it?
With water or an AK thinner. A few drops are enough for brush work; airbrushing needs more – AK thinners and cleaners are made for that. With acrylics, two thin coats always beat one thick one.
Is the finish really matt?
Yes, the 3rd Generation range dries matt. To protect the figure or even out the sheen, seal it with a matt varnish at the end.
