Kolinsky sable, 7.0 mm hair, 1.10 mm body. Detail brush for eyes, edges and point work on miniatures. Made in Germany.

Size 0 is the detail round of da Vinci's MAESTRO Series 10 – the classic detail size, and the one that answers instantly. Made in Nuremberg from pure Siberian Tobolsky Kolinsky red sable on a short black-polished handle with a silver ferrule. The body measures 1.10 mm at the ferrule with 7.0 mm of visible hair. Short hair flexes less, so the tip goes exactly where you put it – which is what an eye or an armour edge asks for.

What it does on a miniature

  • Eyes and pupils – 1.10 mm body, 7.0 mm hair. The point does not spring back or wander once placed, so the pupil lands first time.
  • Hard edges – Edge highlights on armour, blades and trim. Short hair pulls a straight line without waver.
  • Point detail – Rivets, buckles, teeth, eye glints, buttons. Everything placed as a dot rather than a stroke.
  • Touch-ups – Fixes after masking and airbrushing, where you need to hit one spot and nothing around it.

Series 10, Series 35 or MICRO-MAESTRO 100?

All three use Tobolsky Kolinsky sable and all three are made in Nuremberg. What separates them is hair length, and therefore what they can do.

Series 10 in size 0 carries 7.0 mm of hair on a 1.10 mm body – control over the point, a smaller reservoir. Series 35 in the same size carries 12.0 mm on 1.91 mm – far more paint, so it wins at layering and glazing, but the point flexes more. MICRO-MAESTRO 100 goes smaller still: size 10/0 has 5.0 mm of hair on a 0.70 mm body and is only 145 mm long overall – a micro-detail instrument, not a general brush.

In short: Series 10 for detail, Series 35 for layering, MICRO-MAESTRO 100 for what you can no longer see under a size 0.

FAQ

What is the best brush for painting eyes on a miniature?
On 28–35 mm figures, this size. The 1.10 mm body gives a pupil-sized point and the short 7.0 mm hair does not flex, so the dot lands where you aim it. If you paint eyes often, a Series 10 size 00 is worth owning too.

Can a Kolinsky brush be used with acrylics?
Yes. da Vinci lists watercolour and gouache for Series 10; in miniature painting it is used mostly with acrylics. The one rule is to keep paint from drying in the ferrule – rinse as you work and never stand the brush in water.

Series 10 or Series 35?
If you mostly place point detail, eyes and edges, Series 10. If you layer, glaze and do freehand, Series 35 – its 5 mm of extra hair holds more paint and finishes a line on one load.

How do I make a Kolinsky brush last?
Keep paint out of the ferrule, wash with lukewarm water and brush soap (da Vinci makes one on a pure vegetable oil base), reshape the point with your fingers and dry it flat or tip-down. Never store it in water, and keep metallics and pigments off it — use synthetic for those.

Is this real Kolinsky or a blend?
Series 10 is pure Tobolsky Kolinsky – Siberian red sable from selected male winter tails, with no blended hair and no synthetic filler. Every brush is individually checked and the handle is imprinted MAESTRO TOBOLSKY-KOLINSKY 10 GERMANY.
