Size 2 is the round brush of da Vinci's NOVA Series 1570 – flats, washes and the dirty work. Extra-fine gold-coloured synthetic fibre on a short green lacquered handle, made in Nuremberg. The body measures 2.05 mm with 11.5 mm of visible hair.

What it does on a miniature

  • Basecoating – 11.5 mm of hair on a 2.05 mm body – cloaks, bases and terrain in a single pass.
  • Washes and oil washes – Synthetic fibre does not soak up like sable, so it cleans up after oil washes and thinners far more easily.
  • Terrain and bases – Texture pastes, gravel and pigments – the work a brush gets sacrificed to.

Synthetic or Kolinsky sable?

NOVA is a synthetic fibre. It lacks the capillary action of sable, so it holds less thinned paint and the point splays sooner in a long stroke. In exchange it survives what destroys sable: coarse-pigment metallics, pigment powders, washes, primer, varnish, glue and thinners. At the same size number the NOVA carries 11.5 mm of hair on a 2.05 mm body, the Kolinsky Series 10 11.5 mm on 1.70 mm — so the NOVA is slightly larger and stiffer.

The practical split: synthetic for base layers, technical paints and dirty work; Kolinsky for layering, glazing and detail. For that second half, see the da Vinci MAESTRO Series 35.

FAQ

Does the NOVA synthetic handle miniature acrylics?
Yes — synthetic fibre suits acrylics better than natural hair, because it tolerates constant rinsing and harsher mediums. da Vinci lists acrylic, watercolour, gouache, oil, tempera and ink for Series 1570.

Is synthetic worse than Kolinsky sable?
Not worse, different. Sable holds more thinned paint and keeps its point longer, so it wins at layering and glazing. Synthetic is stiffer, cheaper and survives metallics, pigments, primer and glue, all of which ruin sable.

Which NOVA 1570 size should I pick?
000 for controlled washes and technical work, 0 as the all-round work brush for base layers and metallics, 2 for flats, bases and terrain.

Why is it so cheap?
It is synthetic fibre, not sable. The manufacture and the quality control are the same German ones — only the material costs less. That is exactly why it pays to own several and not baby them.
