Paint Sets
An AK 3rd Generation paint set is a ready-made palette for one specific job. Instead of picking six shades one at a time and hoping they sit together, you get a matched group where shadow, base and highlight follow on from each other and every bottle carries its role in its name. There are 29 sets – from flesh tones, metals and NMM through Second World War uniforms and vehicle camouflage to signature selections by well-known painters. The paints come from the 3rd Generation range in 17 ml bottles, so they can be replaced individually once used up.

How to choose
It comes down to what you are painting. For a particular surface – skin, leather, metal, wood – look for a themed set; it holds a complete ladder from shadow to highlight, so nothing needs blending. For a historical figure or vehicle, a historical set saves hours of chasing the right shades, because the paints are named after period standards. And if you are starting out or want a universal palette, reach for a signature set – eighteen shades from which practically everything else can be mixed.
The first set in a collection is usually flesh or metallics, because those two surfaces appear on every figure and are the hardest to mix. If you are buying a gift for someone who has not started painting yet, the safest choice is the starter set with a figure.
Frequently asked questions
Is a set better value than singles?
Across six bottles the per-bottle price is lower than buying separately, and the shades are chosen to work together. If you already own most of a set, topping up the missing bottles is the better buy.
Are the paints in the sets standard catalogue shades?
Yes. Every set holds standard 3rd Generation paints, so each can be bought individually under its own code once used up.
Can sets be combined with each other?
Yes – it is one and the same range, with the same binder and the same matt finish. Shades from different sets mix without restriction.
What else do I need besides the paint?
A brush and a palette. The AK brush range or da Vinci are a good start; for the base, AK textures and pastes work well.
