Burnishers are steel punches with polished ball and domed tips. Unlike carving tools they do not remove material – they press it. Putty is shaped, smoothed and burnished with them, so they leave no grooves and no brush marks behind. The set holds five pieces with different tip diameters, so there is always one that fits a particular fold or hollow. Besides putty they are used to form thin foil: press a tip into kitchen foil laid on a soft surface and you get a precise hemispherical headlight lens.

Frequently asked questions
Why do the tips have different diameters?
Because every detail has its own radius. A small tip makes a rivet or a shrapnel pit, a large one a hollow or a headlight lens. With a single tip you would be stuck with a single size of detail.
How is a foil headlight made?
Lay a piece of kitchen foil on a soft surface – rubber or a folded cloth works – and press the tip straight down into it. The result is an exact hemisphere with a shiny inside, which is then cut out and glued into the light housing where it reads as glass over a reflector.
Do burnishers leave a smooth surface?
Yes, that is their purpose. The tips are polished, so they smooth putty rather than tear it. If the putty is too tacky, wet the tip with water or alcohol.
