The MICRO-COLINEO Set 172 is a four-piece set of Series 172 micro brushes in sizes 20/0, 15/0, 10/0 and 5/0 – the complete ladder of the smallest sizes da Vinci makes. It is not an arbitrary bundle; it is the whole micro range at once.

The brushes use COLINEO synthetic fibre, developed by da Vinci as a Kolinsky sable replacement. It mixes straight and waved filaments of differing lengths – the waved ones create capillary spaces between fibres that draw in and hold paint, the straight ones pull the tip into an ultra-fine point.

What it does on a miniature

  • Pupils and glints – Bodies from 0.50 mm. A pupil-sized dot on a 28 mm figure, placed without touching the white.
  • Micro lettering and runes – Script, numbers, seams and heraldry at a scale where an ordinary detail brush only makes blobs.
  • The whole ladder at once – No guessing which size suits you. Try all four and find where your limit actually is.
  • Technical paints without worry – Synthetic survives metallics and pigments that would wear a sable micro brush down.

Set 172, or the sable MICRO-MAESTRO 100?

Both ranges share the same short 145 mm handle and near-identical dimensions. The difference is the fibre and the price.

In size 20/0 the dimensions match exactly; in the larger sizes the sable Series 100 carries slightly more hair, so a slightly larger reservoir. Sable also holds a sharp point longer. Synthetic in turn survives harsher mediums and costs considerably less.

Recommendation: if you are new to micro detail, buy the set – you try all four sizes and find out which one you actually reach for. Buying that single size in sable makes sense after that, not before.

FAQ

What exactly is in the set?
Four Series 172 brushes in sizes 20/0, 15/0, 10/0 and 5/0, in a 220 × 40 × 10.5 mm package. No duplicates – each size once.

Why the hexagonal handle and the blue band?
A hexagonal handle will not roll off the table – on a brush with a half-millimetre body that is not cosmetic, since a fall on the tip ends it. The blue band identifies the series, so you spot it instantly in a jar of twenty brushes.

Is the set better value than single brushes?
If you do not yet know which micro size you will use, yes – you get the whole ladder and find out in practice. If you already know you want one size and want the best performance, buy it in the sable Series 100.

Is it vegan?
Yes. The fibre is fully synthetic, with no animal hair.

How do I look after them?
Paint must never dry in the ferrule – on a brush this small that is irreversible. Wash with lukewarm water and brush soap after painting, reshape the point and dry flat. Avoid hot water, which deforms synthetic fibre permanently.
