What it is for in figure painting
- Shadows on dark skin – eye sockets, neck, folds and the undersides of limbs.
- Base coat – for very dark complexions.
- Glazes – unifying and deepening flesh tones.
- Hair and eyebrows – dark tones with a warm undertone.
What to pair it with
Work up through Dark Flesh and Medium Flesh Tone, with Basic Skin Tone at the top points. Add Retarder for smooth blends.
Frequently asked questions
Why not shade dark skin with ordinary brown?
Because it greys out and reads as grime. Afro Shadow is formulated to stay warm and coloured in shadow – which is exactly what dark skin needs.
How should I highlight dark skin?
Never with white. Work up through lighter flesh tones – Dark Flesh, Medium Flesh Tone and finally Basic Skin Tone on the top points.
How do I thin it?
With water or an AK thinner. A few drops are enough for brush work; airbrushing needs more – AK thinners and cleaners are made for that. With acrylics, two thin coats always beat one thick one.
Is the finish really matt?
Yes, the 3rd Generation range dries matt. To protect the figure or even out the sheen, seal it with a matt varnish at the end.
