Dark Flesh is a dark flesh tone with a brown undertone. On fair skin it is the shadow in eye sockets, under the nose and in the folds of the neck; on darker skin it is the base tone everything else is built from.

What it is for in figure painting

What to pair it with
Go deeper with Afro Shadow or Burnt Umber, lighter through Medium Flesh Tone and Basic Skin Tone. Add Retarder for smooth blends.
Frequently asked questions
Why not shade skin with brown paint?
An ordinary brown drains the colour out of skin and the face reads as dirty. Dark Flesh darkens while keeping the skin tone – the difference shows most on faces.
Can it be used as a glaze?
Yes – thinned well down it is excellent for softly shading the neck and eye sockets. Build it in thin passes.
How do I thin it?
With water or an AK thinner. A few drops are enough for brush work; airbrushing needs more – AK thinners and cleaners are made for that. With acrylics, two thin coats always beat one thick one.
Is the finish really matt?
Yes, the 3rd Generation range dries matt. To protect the figure or even out the sheen, seal it with a matt varnish at the end.
