Basic Skin Tone is a mid flesh colour meant as a starting point rather than a finished shade. It is neutral – no pink or yellow drift – so you can build both lighter and darker skin from it.

What it is for in figure painting
- Base coat for skin – faces, hands and exposed limbs.
- Mid tone – between a dark shadow and a light highlight on cheeks, nose and forehead.
- Mixing your own tone – with white for pale skin, with brown for darker skin.
- Large areas – busts and larger scales where you need smooth transitions.
What to pair it with
Shade with Dark Flesh or a drop of Leather Brown; highlight with Light Flesh and white. For smooth blends it is worth adding Retarder.
Frequently asked questions
What skin does Basic Skin Tone suit?
Mid-light European skin. Darken it with Dark Flesh for deeper tones, lighten with Light Flesh for very pale skin.
Why does my skin look flat?
Flesh needs at least three tones. Keep the base, add a shadow in the eye sockets and under the nose, and highlight the high points – one shade will always look flat.
How do I thin it?
With water or an AK thinner. A few drops are enough for brush work; airbrushing needs more – AK thinners and cleaners are made for that. With acrylics, two thin coats always beat one thick one.
Is the finish really matt?
Yes, the 3rd Generation range dries matt. To protect the figure or even out the sheen, seal it with a matt varnish at the end.
