Black Green from the AK 3rd Generation range – a near-black green for the deepest shadows and dark vehicles. Matt acrylic.

Black Green is a green on the edge of black. In practice it does two jobs: the deepest shadow under green areas, and a dark base for military vehicles where pure black reads too harsh.

What it is for in figure painting

  • Deepest shadows on green – the bottom of folds on uniforms and canvas.
  • Dark military vehicles – the base for dark green schemes.
  • Cold black – black clothing with a cool undertone.
  • Forest and night schemes – darkness that should keep colour.

What to pair it with

Work up through Dark Green and Olive Green. On black surfaces use it as the cold alternative to Carbon Black.

Frequently asked questions

Why not shade green with black?
Because black kills green into grey. Black Green goes just as deep and the shadow stays green – the figure then reads as coloured rather than grimy.

Is it a good vehicle base?
Yes, as the undercoat for dark green schemes. Compared with black it gives the greens above it a warmer, more natural tone.

How do I thin it?
With water or an AK thinner. A few drops are enough for brush work; airbrushing needs more – AK thinners and cleaners are made for that. With acrylics, two thin coats always beat one thick one.

Is the finish really matt?
Yes, the 3rd Generation range dries matt. To protect the figure or even out the sheen, seal it with a matt varnish at the end.
