Black is a pure opaque black with no tone at all. On a figure use it deliberately – in the deepest grooves, on pupils and for sharp lines between surfaces. Over large areas Cold Black or Dark Violet are better, because they keep a tone.

Frequently asked questions
Why not paint black cloth with black?
Because black reflects no light and the surface loses its shape. Black cloth is really a dark grey with black folds – base with Cold Black or Steel Shadow and keep black for the deepest points only.
How do I paint eyes?
Black over the whole eye first, then the white on both sides, and finally a narrow vertical pupil. The pupil has to be smaller than it feels – a large black blob looks startled.
How do I thin this paint?
With water or an Ionic thinner. The formula is self-hydrating, so it stays workable on the palette far longer than ordinary acrylics – a drop is enough for brush work, and roughly 1 : 1 for airbrush.
Is the finish really matt?
Yes, it dries matt with no shiny patches. If the figure is going on the gaming table, seal it with a matt varnish at the end.
