What it is for in figure painting
- Deepest shadows – cloth folds, under straps and into the gaps of armour.
- Wood glazes – thinned it darkens grain and joints.
- Dirt and grime – on boots, bases and the lower edges of cloaks.
What to pair it with
Use it as the shadow under Dark Brown and Leather Brown; with a little black it gives a near-black shadow that stays warm.
Frequently asked questions
Why use umber when I have black?
Black kills a shadow and turns it grey. Burnt Umber darkens while keeping the tone warm – the figure reads deeper rather than dirty.
How do I thin it?
With water or an AK thinner. A few drops are enough for brush work; airbrushing needs more – AK thinners and cleaners are made for that. With acrylics, two thin coats always beat one thick one.
Is the finish really matt?
Yes, the 3rd Generation range dries matt. To protect the figure or even out the sheen, seal it with a matt varnish at the end.
