What it is for in figure painting
- Straps, belts and pouches – a base coat that looks like real leather once shaded and highlighted.
- Boots – dark enough that it needs no separate undercoat.
- Wood – rifle stocks, hafts, crates and carts; thinned down it glazes nicely over a lighter base.
- Hair and fur – chestnut manes, dogs, horses and fur trim.
What to pair it with
Shade with Dark Brown and Burnt Umber; highlight with Tan Yellow and Deck Tan. For sun-bleached, worn leather add a drop of Deck Tan.

How is Leather Brown different from Dark Brown?
Leather Brown is lighter and warmer; Dark Brown is darker and more neutral. The usual pairing is Dark Brown as the shadow and Leather Brown as the base tone.
Does it cover over black?
Not completely in one coat. Over black expect two thin coats, or base with a dark brown first.
How do I thin it?
With water or an AK thinner. A few drops are enough for brush work; airbrushing needs more – AK thinners and cleaners are made for that. With acrylics, two thin coats always beat one thick one.
Is the finish really matt?
Yes, the 3rd Generation range dries matt. To protect the figure or even out the sheen, seal it with a matt varnish at the end.
