Copper from the AK 3rd Generation Metallic range – a fine-pigment copper for kettles, pipework and steampunk detail. Acrylic metallic.

Copper is a bright reddish metal with a pigment fine enough to read as metal rather than glitter. It is one of those metallics that only comes alive once shaded – clean copper is very light and loses its form without a shadow.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my copper look like orange paint?
It has no shadow. Run a brown or Rusty Brass glaze into the recesses – contrast is what turns a metallic into metal.

Can Copper be thinned for an airbrush?
Yes, but with acrylic thinner rather than water. Water separates metallic pigment and the finish comes out blotchy.

How do I thin it?
With water or an AK thinner. A few drops are enough for brush work; airbrushing needs more – AK thinners and cleaners are made for that. With acrylics, two thin coats always beat one thick one.

Is the finish really matt?
Yes, the 3rd Generation range dries matt. To protect the figure or even out the sheen, seal it with a matt varnish at the end.
