Size 6 of the MAESTRO Series 1301 is the largest flat Kolinsky we stock: 11.0 mm of hair, 6.2 mm wide. On a 28 mm miniature it is big; it belongs on busts, large monsters, vehicles, dragon wings and diorama bases – anywhere you want a continuous surface without a single visible stroke.
From size 6 upwards, da Vinci supplies Series 1301 individually in a gift box. The brush has the same short black lacquered handle and silver ferrule as the smaller sizes, but at 6.2 mm wide there is far more hair in the ferrule – one load of glaze covers the whole cheek of a bust.

If you mostly paint 28–32 mm infantry, you do not need the 6 – take size 2, plus size 4 for cloaks and vehicles. The 6 makes sense when there is a bust, a figure of 75 mm or more, or a vehicle on your desk, with surfaces measured in whole centimetres.
For comparison, the synthetic NOVA 1375 size 2 filbert is 4.5 mm wide and costs a fraction of the price – perfectly fine for basecoats and technical paints. You buy the Kolinsky 6 for the final layers that have to be perfectly smooth.
What is size 6 for in miniature painting?
Busts, figures of 75 mm and up, large monsters and vehicles. At 6.2 mm wide it covers a large area in one stroke, so glazes and transitions stay smooth.
Does it come in a box?
Yes. da Vinci supplies Series 1301 from size 6 upwards individually packed in a gift box – it also works as a present for a painter.
Can I use it for varnish or primer?
Keep varnish, primer, metallics and glue out of sable – they glue the hair together and the edge will not come back. Use an inexpensive synthetic such as NOVA 1570 or NOVA 1375 for that.
How do I look after it?
Wash it straight after painting in lukewarm water with 4033 brush soap, which also conditions the hair. Shape a straight edge and dry it flat. A bigger brush holds more water in the ferrule – let it dry longer before you put the cap back on.
