Size 2 of the MAESTRO Series 1301 is a flat brush made from genuine Siberian Tobolsky Kolinsky sable. The hair is 9.0 mm long and 2.7 mm wide – the width of an armour plate, a sword blade or a shield rim on a 28–32 mm miniature. It is the smallest flat sable da Vinci makes in this series, and for a miniature painter the most useful one.
The difference from a round brush is what the stroke leaves behind. A round Kolinsky such as Series 10 ends in a point and draws a line. The flat 1301 has a straight edge: laid flat, it paints a band of exact width; turned on its edge, it draws a crisp straight line. Sable also holds more thinned paint than synthetic fibre and releases it evenly, so a glaze over a flat surface goes down without stripes.

Size 2 (2.7 mm) is the brush for 28–32 mm miniatures: blades, armour plates, shield rims and straight highlights. If you buy one flat sable, buy this one.
Size 4 (4.5 mm, 10.0 mm hair) is for larger areas – cloaks, wings, vehicle panels and 54–75 mm figures. Size 6 (6.2 mm, 11.0 mm hair) is for busts, big monsters and vehicles.
If you want a blend with no hard edge at the end of the stroke, a flat is the wrong tool – take the NOVA 1375 filbert. Never drybrush with sable; that is what the synthetic DRY BRUSH 140 is built for.
Why use a flat brush on miniatures when most painters use rounds?
A round paints with its point, a flat with its edge and face. On flat surfaces – armour, blades, shields, vehicle panels – a flat lays paint down more evenly and makes straighter edge highlights. The round stays for detail, eyes and organic shapes.
Why sable rather than synthetic?
Kolinsky hair has microscopic scales that hold more paint, and it springs back into shape. With glazes and thin layers that means longer strokes between reloads and an even release of paint. A synthetic flat is cheaper and better for rough work – metallics, washes and drybrushing.
Is size 2 small enough for a 28 mm miniature?
Yes. 2.7 mm matches a shoulder plate or a sword blade at that scale. For smaller areas such as fingers and belts, use a round brush such as Series 10.
How do I look after it?
Never let paint dry in the ferrule. After painting, wash the brush in lukewarm water with da Vinci 4033 brush soap, shape the hair into a straight edge with your fingers and dry it flat. Metallics and drybrushing do not belong in sable.
