Dark Red is a very dark red with a brown core – the deepest point of the red ladder before the colour would turn black. Use it as the final shade in folds and as the base coat from which a bright red is built upwards.

Build shadows with Cardinal Purple and Scab Red, transitions and highlights with Red and Terracota.
Why base a red with a dark red?
Because red over a light base looks flat and over black it loses luminosity. A dark red undercoat gives the final colour depth and coverage at once.
When should I use Scab Red instead?
When the shadow should be cooler and grimmer. Dark Red is warm and browner, Scab Red more violet and more sombre.
How do I thin this paint?
With water or an Ionic thinner. The formula is self-hydrating, so it stays workable on the palette far longer than ordinary acrylics – a drop is enough for brush work, and roughly 1 : 1 for airbrush.
Is the finish really matt?
Yes, it dries matt with no shiny patches. If the figure is going on the gaming table, seal it with a matt varnish at the end.
