This ink belongs to the Ink range, which AK marks with a light blue circle. It is very thin and transparent – it flows into recesses by itself, shading eye sockets, the area under the nose and the folds of the neck in one pass.

What it is for in figure painting

  • Shading skin – eye sockets, under the nose, neck and knuckles.
  • Unifying flesh tones – a filter over an area with several transitions.
  • Warming skin back up – a thin glaze that restores colour after over-highlighting.
  • Hair and fur – softly shading light tones.

What to pair it with

Apply over finished, dry paint. Thin it with Glaze Medium for softer glazes, or combine it with Penetrating Red for flush.

Frequently asked questions

How do I shade a face in one pass?
Lay the ink over the finished base coat and let it flow into the recesses. Lift the excess off the raised areas immediately with a clean, slightly damp brush.

Why did my ink dry with tidemarks?
On a large smooth surface it dries unevenly. Thin it with Glaze Medium and build thin passes instead of one.

How do I thin it?
With water or an AK thinner. A few drops are enough for brush work; airbrushing needs more – AK thinners and cleaners are made for that. With acrylics, two thin coats always beat one thick one.

Is the finish really matt?
Yes, the 3rd Generation range dries matt. To protect the figure or even out the sheen, seal it with a matt varnish at the end.
