White Grey from the AK 3rd Generation range – a very pale grey for shadows on white and cool highlights. Matt acrylic.

White Grey is a light grey on the edge of white. It does the job most painters attempt with a mix of white and black – and does it better: a balanced, slightly cool tone that works as the first shadow step on white areas.

What it is for in figure painting

What to pair it with

Shade with Neutral Grey or Pastel Violet; highlight with Offwhite and Titanium White. With Pale Blue it turns cooler and bluer.

Frequently asked questions

How do I paint snow?
Base in Offwhite, shade with White Grey and a blue glaze in the hollows, and keep pure white for the crests. Snow in shadow is always bluish, never grey.

Why not mix grey from white and black?
Because that mix tends to be cold and dead. The range's ready-made greys have a balanced undertone and look more natural on a figure.

How do I thin it?
With water or an AK thinner. A few drops are enough for brush work; airbrushing needs more – AK thinners and cleaners are made for that. With acrylics, two thin coats always beat one thick one.

Is the finish really matt?
Yes, the 3rd Generation range dries matt. To protect the figure or even out the sheen, seal it with a matt varnish at the end.
