Wine Red is one of the darkest reds in the range – deep, slightly purple and saturated. On a figure it mainly serves as the deepest shadow under red, one that, unlike black, does not strip the colour of its warmth.

What it is for in figure painting
- Deepest shadows on red – the bottom of folds and areas with no light.
- Rich fabrics – velvet that should read heavy and expensive.

What to pair it with
Go deeper with Black Red, lighter through Bordeaux Red and Cadmium Red. With Deep Purple the shadow turns colder and more violet.
Frequently asked questions
Why not use black to shade red?
Because black turns red grey. Wine Red darkens the colour while keeping its red identity – that is the difference between a muddy shadow and a rich one.
Wine Red or Bordeaux Red?
Wine Red is darker and more purple; Bordeaux Red is lighter and browner. They are commonly used in sequence as two shadow steps.
How do I thin it?
With water or an AK thinner. A few drops are enough for brush work; airbrushing needs more – AK thinners and cleaners are made for that. With acrylics, two thin coats always beat one thick one.
Is the finish really matt?
Yes, the 3rd Generation range dries matt. To protect the figure or even out the sheen, seal it with a matt varnish at the end.
