Size 00 is the finest size of the MAESTRO Series 10 we stock – a 0.90 mm body at the ferrule with 6.5 mm of visible hair. Made in Nuremberg from pure Siberian Tobolsky Kolinsky red sable on a short black-polished handle with a silver ferrule. Against the size 0 that is half a millimetre less hair and 0.20 mm less body – a difference you notice the moment you place a pupil on a 28 mm figure.

The size 0 has a 1.10 mm body and 7.0 mm of hair; the 00 has 0.90 mm and 6.5 mm. A small gap on paper, a real one in use. Size 0 is the all-rounder – it does an eye and a whole face, because it carries more paint. The 00 is a specialist: less paint, so it dries out on a long line, but the point is finer and on a pupil or a glint that is what counts.
If this is your first Kolinsky brush, buy the size 0. Add the 00 as a second brush once you find the 0 is not fine enough for eyes.
To go finer still, the MICRO-MAESTRO 100 range starts where this one ends – size 10/0 carries 5.0 mm of hair on a 0.70 mm body.
Is size 00 better than size 0 for eyes?
For the pupil and the glint, yes – the point is finer. For the whole eye including the white and the lid, the size 0 is more comfortable, because it holds more paint and will not dry out mid-stroke.
Is a brush this fine not overkill?
Not on 28–35 mm figures. A pupil at that scale is about a quarter of a millimetre, and a 0.90 mm body is exactly the difference between a dot and a smudge. At 54 mm and above a size 0 is enough.
Can a Kolinsky brush be used with acrylics?
Yes, as long as paint never dries in the ferrule. Rinse as you work and never stand the brush in water. On a brush this fine it matters twice as much – dried paint at the ferrule ruins the point immediately.
How do I make a Kolinsky brush last?
Keep paint out of the ferrule, wash with lukewarm water and brush soap (da Vinci makes one on a pure vegetable oil base), reshape the point with your fingers and dry it flat or tip-down. Never store it in water, and keep metallics and pigments off it — use synthetic for those.
Is this real Kolinsky or a blend?
Series 10 is pure Tobolsky Kolinsky – Siberian red sable from selected male winter tails, with no blended hair and no synthetic filler. Every brush is individually checked and the handle is imprinted MAESTRO TOBOLSKY-KOLINSKY 10 GERMANY.
