Size 1 is the transition size of the MAESTRO Series 10 – past pure detail, not yet a flats brush. The body measures 1.30 mm at the ferrule with 9.0 mm of visible hair, 2.0 mm more than the size 0. In practice that is the difference between three strokes and one. Made in Nuremberg from pure Siberian Tobolsky Kolinsky red sable on a short black-polished handle with a silver ferrule.

Within Series 10 it is straightforward: the size 0 carries 7.0 mm of hair on a 1.10 mm body and is a detail brush. The size 1 carries 9.0 mm on 1.30 mm – more paint, slightly less precision. If you mostly paint faces and smaller areas, the size 1 saves you time.
For a bigger reservoir at a similar thickness, look at Series 35. Its size 1 carries 13.0 mm of hair on a 1.97 mm body – 4 mm more hair than here. Layering goes faster, but the point flexes more, so it gives ground on detail.
What size do I need for layering faces?
On 28–35 mm figures, this one. It holds enough paint to pull a layer out while it is wet, and the point is still fine enough for an eyebrow or a lip. Keep a size 0 or 00 for the eyes themselves.
Is the size 1 more versatile than the size 0?
If you paint more area than dots, yes. If you spend most of your time on faces and edges, the size 0 wins. Most painters end up owning both.
Can a Kolinsky brush be used with acrylics?
Yes, as long as paint never dries in the ferrule. Rinse as you work and never stand the brush in water.
How do I make a Kolinsky brush last?
Keep paint out of the ferrule, wash with lukewarm water and brush soap (da Vinci makes one on a pure vegetable oil base), reshape the point with your fingers and dry it flat or tip-down. Never store it in water, and keep metallics and pigments off it — use synthetic for those.
Is this real Kolinsky or a blend?
Series 10 is pure Tobolsky Kolinsky – Siberian red sable from selected male winter tails, with no blended hair and no synthetic filler. Every brush is individually checked and the handle is imprinted MAESTRO TOBOLSKY-KOLINSKY 10 GERMANY.
