Kolinsky sable, 4.0 mm hair, extra-short dense binding. Maximum control for eyes, dots and corrections. Made in Germany.

Size 0 of the MAESTRO Series 1505 is an extra-short retouching brush – the standard retouching size – the first 1505 most painters buy. That is the whole point of the series: the short dense binding barely flexes, so the tip goes exactly where you place it and will not splay under pressure. Made in Nuremberg from selected Kolinsky red sable on a short black-lacquered handle with a silver ferrule.

What it does on a miniature

  • Eyes and pupils – 4.0 mm of hair means almost no flex. The dot lands where you aim it, even if your hand is not steady.
  • Corrections and retouching – Covering a mistake precisely, without repainting the whole area.
  • Small freehand – Runes, script, seams. Short hair does not run away and the line does not waver.
  • Fluid paints – da Vinci specifies Series 1505 for fluid paints – the short dense binding keeps them under control.

Why such short hair?

Compare the same size number across the ranges. In size 0 the Series 1505 carries 4.0 mm of hair, Series 10 7.0 mm and Series 35 12.0 mm. The difference is not the thickness of the point but how much the hair flexes and how much paint it holds.

What you gain: control. Short hair does not run away, does not waver and does not splay under pressure. If your hands shake or you paint late at night, you feel the difference.

What you give up: the reservoir. Series 1505 holds little paint and dries out fast. It is not a layering, glazing or basecoating brush – use Series 35 or the synthetic NOVA 1570 for that. Series 1505 is a precision specialist, not an all-rounder.

FAQ

What is a "retouching" brush for on a miniature?
The name comes from restoration, where it fills in damaged areas of a painting. On a miniature it does the same thing: hit one spot precisely. Painters use it mostly for eyes, rivets, glints and fixing mistakes.

Is Series 1505 better than Series 10 for eyes?
If it bothers you that the point bends under pressure, yes – 4.0 mm of hair against 7.0 mm on Series 10 is a completely different feel. If you can control longer hair, Series 10 is more versatile because it holds more paint.

Why does it dry out so fast?
Because the reservoir is very small – that is the price of short hair. Thin the paint less, or reload more often. It is not a fault.

Is this the same Kolinsky as in Series 10 and 35?
Not quite. Series 10 and 35 use Tobolsky Kolinsky, the selected Siberian grade. Series 1505 uses Kolinsky sable without that designation. At this hair length it makes little practical difference, because the binding decides the behaviour, not the flex of the hair.

How do I look after it?
Keep paint out of the ferrule, wash with lukewarm water and brush soap (da Vinci makes one on a pure vegetable oil base) and dry it flat. Short hair cannot be reshaped the way long hair can, which makes it all the more important never to let paint dry in it.
