What it is for in figure painting
- Saturated mid tones – where an ordinary red goes weak once thinned.
- Glazes on skin and muscle – warm blood flush on ears, knuckles and the nose.
- Colour accents – sashes, ribbons, feathers and details meant to draw the eye.
- Fire effects – the step between Dragon Blood and yellow.
What to pair it with
Push it into shadow with Russet Shadow or Dragon Blood, into light with orange and yellow. With Beast Brown you get an earthier, less strident tone.
Frequently asked questions
How is Color Punch different from regular 3Gen paints?
Higher pigmentation. AK formulated them to hold their intensity through thinning and mixing – an ordinary paint in the same glaze fades sooner.
Is Sun Red good for glazing skin?
Very much so. Thin it to a very light glaze and lay it on ears, knuckles and the tip of the nose – the flush looks natural even on a small figure.
How do I thin it?
With water or an AK thinner. A few drops are enough for brush work; airbrushing needs more – AK thinners and cleaners are made for that. With acrylics, two thin coats always beat one thick one.
Is the finish really matt?
Yes, the 3rd Generation range dries matt. To protect the figure or even out the sheen, seal it with a matt varnish at the end.
