Burnt Umber is the classic dark umber brown – neutral, deep and the most used brown in painting generally. It is the main shade of the whole brown ladder and the colour you thin into a universal glaze for dirtying anything.

What it is good for on miniatures

Frequently asked questions

What is a universal brown glaze for?
Unification. When a figure looks fragmented, a very thin Burnt Umber taken over the whole model ties it together and deepens every recess at once.

If I buy only one brown for shading, which one?
This one. Burnt Umber shades leather, wood, earth and gold, and it is neutral enough not to shift the hue anywhere.

How do I thin this paint?
With water or an Ionic thinner. The formula is self-hydrating, so it stays workable on the palette far longer than ordinary acrylics – a drop is enough for brush work, and roughly 1 : 1 for airbrush.

Is the finish really matt?
Yes, it dries matt with no shiny patches. If the figure is going on the gaming table, seal it with a matt varnish at the end.
