Cold Black from the Ionic Smart Colors range – a near-black with a green cast for shading and cloth. Matt 20 ml acrylic.

Cold Black is a near-black with a very soft green cast – a black that still has a tone. On a figure it works better than pure black because the surface stays readable and can be pushed towards green or grey when highlighted.

What it is good for on miniatures

What to combine it with

Build shadows with Black, transitions and highlights with Admiral Grey and Ogre Green.

Frequently asked questions

How does it differ from Black?
Cold Black has a tone, Black has none. Use Cold Black on surfaces and keep pure black for the deepest grooves and for eyes.

How do I paint raven feathers?
Base with Cold Black, highlight with Misty Grey in narrow strokes along the feathers, and glaze a few of them with a soft blue or violet. Black feathers have coloured reflections – without them they look like rubber.

How do I thin this paint?
With water or an Ionic thinner. The formula is self-hydrating, so it stays workable on the palette far longer than ordinary acrylics – a drop is enough for brush work, and roughly 1 : 1 for airbrush.

Is the finish really matt?
Yes, it dries matt with no shiny patches. If the figure is going on the gaming table, seal it with a matt varnish at the end.
