A fern is a plant nothing else substitutes for – the leaf shape is far too distinctive to pass as a clump of grass. These are CO2 laser-cut from paper and carry detail as far as the scale allows: every frond is cut into leaflets along its whole length. The flat cut-out becomes a plant once the leaflets are bent, it is fixed with PVA or fixer, and after painting it is hard to tell from a real fern in a photograph.

Frequently asked questions
Do the ferns need painting?
Yes. The cut-outs come in the base colour of the paper, so they are painted in acrylic – best from above with an airbrush, then the fronds drawn over in a darker tone at the base. Unpainted they read flat.
How do I get shape into a flat cut-out?
Bend the individual leaflets upward with tweezers, then curve the whole frond gently. A fern never grows straight – it is that curve which makes it look alive.
Which scales fit?
The maker recommends 1:32 and 1:35, but they work just as well in 1:48 and alongside 54 to 75 mm figures, where they simply read as smaller specimens.
