Carmine from the AK 3rd Generation range – a cool raspberry red for fabrics, highlights and skin glazes. Matt acrylic.

Carmine is a cool red shifted towards raspberry – free of the orange cast most reds carry. That lets it go where a warm red would look cheap: fine fabrics, lips, the flush of skin.

What it is for in figure painting

  • Fine fabrics – silk, ribbons and linings.
  • Highlights on dark red – the lighter tone above Bordeaux Red and Amaranth Red.
  • Lips and flush – a very thin glaze on faces.
  • Flowers and plants – base detail.

What to pair it with

Shade with Amaranth Red or Wine Red; highlight with Scarlet Red or a drop of Pastel Pink. With Magenta it moves into saturated fuchsia.

Frequently asked questions

Why is Carmine good on skin?
Because it is cool. A warm red on skin reads as sunburn; a cool raspberry glaze reads as natural flush on cheeks, ears and nose.

Does Carmine cover in one coat?
No. Like most clean reds it needs two thin coats over a light base.

How do I thin it?
With water or an AK thinner. A few drops are enough for brush work; airbrushing needs more – AK thinners and cleaners are made for that. With acrylics, two thin coats always beat one thick one.

Is the finish really matt?
Yes, the 3rd Generation range dries matt. To protect the figure or even out the sheen, seal it with a matt varnish at the end.
