What it is for in figure painting
- Indicators and glass – over silver it reads as orange glass.
- Fire and lava effects – the glow around a light source.
- Tinting metal – a warm rusty cast over steel.
- Boosting orange areas – a top glaze that gives the colour its strength back.
What to pair it with
Apply over finished, dry paint – best over Silver, Medium Orange or white. With Clear Yellow and Clear Red you can build a whole fire gradient.
Frequently asked questions
Why doesn't Clear Orange cover?
Because it isn't meant to – it is a transparent glaze. For an opaque orange use Medium Orange or Deep Orange.
How do I paint the glow around a fire?
Lay several progressively thinner coats of Clear Orange working outwards from the light source. The glow has to fall off smoothly – a hard edge destroys the effect instantly.
How do I thin it?
With water or an AK thinner. A few drops are enough for brush work; airbrushing needs more – AK thinners and cleaners are made for that. With acrylics, two thin coats always beat one thick one.
Is the finish really matt?
Yes, the 3rd Generation range dries matt. To protect the figure or even out the sheen, seal it with a matt varnish at the end.
