Clear Red is not an opaque paint but a transparent glaze. It does not cover the base – it tints it. That is why it belongs wherever metal, light or another colour should show through red: tail lights, glass, energy effects and skin tinting.

What it is for in figure painting
- Tail lights and glass – over silver it reads as coloured glass.
- Tinting metal – red-hot metal and tempered blades.
- Skin glazes – flush without losing the blend underneath.
- Boosting reds – a top glaze that gives red back its depth.
What to pair it with
Apply it over finished, dry paint – best over Silver, Scarlet Red or white. With Clear Orange and Clear Yellow you can build a whole fire gradient.
Frequently asked questions
Why doesn't Clear Red cover?
Because it isn't meant to – it is a transparent glaze. For an opaque red use Cadmium Red or Scarlet Red.
How do I paint a car tail light?
Base in Silver, let it dry and lay two or three coats of Clear Red over it. The silver beneath gives exactly the depth glass has.
How do I thin it?
With water or an AK thinner. A few drops are enough for brush work; airbrushing needs more – AK thinners and cleaners are made for that. With acrylics, two thin coats always beat one thick one.
Is the finish really matt?
Yes, the 3rd Generation range dries matt. To protect the figure or even out the sheen, seal it with a matt varnish at the end.
