Deep Yellow from the AK 3rd Generation range – a saturated dark yellow for clothing, markings and earthy schemes. Matt acrylic.

Deep Yellow is a darker, more saturated yellow with an orange undertone – closer to honey than to lemon. On a figure it is the yellow that reads as dyed cloth rather than a neon sign, which makes it useful on clothing and vehicles alike.

What it is for in figure painting

What to pair it with

Shade with Ochre or Golden Brown; highlight with Yellow and Pale Yellow. A drop of Ocher Orange takes it towards a warm, earthy yellow.

Frequently asked questions

Why does yellow cover so badly?
Yellow pigments have low opacity. The answer is an undercoat – base with Deck Tan, Ochre or Deep Yellow before laying a light yellow on top.

Deep Yellow or Golden Yellow?
Deep Yellow is darker and less orange; Golden Yellow is warmer and more golden. Deep Yellow for clothing, Golden Yellow for gilded effects.

How do I thin it?
With water or an AK thinner. A few drops are enough for brush work; airbrushing needs more – AK thinners and cleaners are made for that. With acrylics, two thin coats always beat one thick one.

Is the finish really matt?
Yes, the 3rd Generation range dries matt. To protect the figure or even out the sheen, seal it with a matt varnish at the end.
