What it is for in figure painting

  • Clothing and trim – tunics, sashes and edging that should look expensive.
  • Fire effects – the stage between orange and pale yellow.
  • Non-metallic gold – the mid tone in a classic NMM scheme.
  • Highlights on yellow – the light tone above Deep Yellow and Ochre.

What to pair it with

Shade with Ochre or Golden Brown; highlight with Yellow and Pale Yellow. For NMM gold, shade with Burnt Umber and put a white point at the top.

Frequently asked questions

How do I paint non-metallic gold?
The sequence runs dark brown, Ochre, Golden Yellow, Pale Yellow and a white point. Contrast is what matters – NMM only works when the darks are genuinely dark.

Golden Yellow or Yellow?
Golden Yellow is warmer and more golden; Yellow is cleaner and cooler. Golden for trim and fire, Yellow for bright clothing.

How do I thin it?
With water or an AK thinner. A few drops are enough for brush work; airbrushing needs more – AK thinners and cleaners are made for that. With acrylics, two thin coats always beat one thick one.

Is the finish really matt?
Yes, the 3rd Generation range dries matt. To protect the figure or even out the sheen, seal it with a matt varnish at the end.
