Primary Yellow from the Ionic Smart Colors range – a clean primary yellow for mixing and saturated areas. Matt 20 ml acrylic.

Primary Yellow is a clean primary yellow with neither an orange nor a green shift. It is a mixing colour in the true sense – with blue it gives a clean green, with red a clean orange, without the result going grey. On a model it is the brightest yellow the range offers.

What it is good for on miniatures

  • Mixing clean tones – the base for your own greens, oranges and flesh tones.
  • Saturated yellow areas – where yellow should read as pigment rather than cloth.
  • Heraldry and markings – crisp yellow fields that must not drift orange.
  • Lightening greens – without the cold shift that white would introduce.

What to combine it with

Build shadows with Camo Green and Frog Green, transitions and highlights with High Coverage Yellow and Yellow.

Frequently asked questions

How does it differ from High Coverage Yellow?
Primary Yellow is cleaner and brighter but covers less well. High Coverage Yellow is for surfaces, Primary Yellow for mixing and for the most saturated points.

Why does mixing it with blue give a muddy green?
Almost always because the blue has a violet undertone. For a clean green use Phthalo Blue – it is the best mixing blue in the range.

How do I thin this paint?
With water or an Ionic thinner. The formula is self-hydrating, so it stays workable on the palette far longer than ordinary acrylics – a drop is enough for brush work, and roughly 1 : 1 for airbrush.

Is the finish really matt?
Yes, it dries matt with no shiny patches. If the figure is going on the gaming table, seal it with a matt varnish at the end.
