Pigment applied dry stays on a model only until the first touch. Fixer changes that: it is laid at the edge of the pigment, drawn underneath by capillary action, and once dry the pigment is there for good. What matters is that on drying the shade returns exactly to the dry colour – no gloss, no dark patch of the sort glues and varnishes leave. The same liquid also serves for wet application, when pigment is mixed straight into it as a slurry.

Frequently asked questions
How is the fixer applied?
Not from above onto the pigment – that would wash it away. Touch a brush to the edge of the pigmented area and the liquid finds its own way underneath. Leave the model alone while it wicks.
Does the fixer change the pigment's shade?
While drying, yes – the pigment looks darker. Once fully dry it returns to the original dry colour. So never adjust the amount of pigment while the surface is still damp.
Can white spirit be used instead?
Yes, it works similarly and AK names it as an alternative. The fixer holds more firmly and disturbs already-laid pigment less, so for a final layer it is the safer choice.
