Static grass is the fastest way to turn a brown base into a meadow. Nylon fibres 2 mm long are sprinkled onto a surface coated with thinned PVA and stand upright once dry – and it is that uprightness which separates grass from moss or scatter. How do I get the grass to stand up?
Coat the surface with thinned PVA, sprinkle the grass from above and tap the base gently from underneath – the vibration stands the fibres up. Anyone doing it often uses a static applicator, but tapping is enough on small areas.
Can the grass be painted once laid?
Yes, with an airbrush and heavily thinned paint. Not with a brush – that lays the fibres flat. Thinned paint sprayed from above unifies the shade and darkens the roots, which reads more naturally.
Why mix shades?
Because real grass is never one colour. Even a rough three-to-one mix of two neighbouring shades turns a surface into something that reads as a meadow rather than a carpet.
