The tropical uniforms worn by the German army in Africa and Sicily came in two basic forms – sand and green – and both faded fast in service. The set is built for exactly that: two complete three-step ladders, shadow, base and highlight, one for each. The shades mix freely, so a uniform at any stage of fading can be blended from them.

FAQ
How do I paint a faded uniform?
Mix the base with the light shade of the same pair and lay it flat; leave the shadow as it is. Fading is strongest on the shoulders and upper back – add more of the light shade there.
Does it work for the Italian army in Africa?
Partly. The sand tones are close, but Italian uniforms carried a greyer-green cast – there it is better to blend your own shade.
Can the paints be bought individually?
Yes. These are standard shades from the AK 3rd Generation range in 17 ml bottles, so when one runs out you only replace that one.
Can they be airbrushed?
Yes. Thinned with 3rd Generation thinner they pass through a 0.2 mm nozzle as easily as lacquer paints. Neat, they are meant for brushwork.
