Five silicone putty brushes, medium tip, small size. Silicone will not bond to epoxy or two-part compound.

Silicone brushes are not for paint, they are for putty. A soft silicone tip does not bond to epoxy or two-part compound the way metal does, so putty can be spread, smoothed and carved without being dragged along. This set is the small size with the medium tip (white) – five pieces with different tip shapes, from flat through rounded to angled. Medium hardness is the all-rounder – it keeps its shape but still gives, which makes smoothing easy. The same tools also serve to spread oil glazes across vehicle panels where a soft transition without brush marks is wanted.

What it is for

  • Shaping and smoothing modelling putty
  • Carving cloth folds and surface texture
  • Spreading oil glazes across vehicle panels
  • Working Milliput, Apoxie Sculpt, green stuff, Fimo and Sculpey

What to pair it with

The other three combinations in the range are medium / medium, small / hard, medium / hard. For fine shaping and stamping detail into putty there are the AK9052 sculpting burnishers, and for spreading pastes the AK9051 modelling spatulas. The textures these tools work into are in the Textures category.

Frequently asked questions

How do I stop putty sticking to the tip?
Wet the tip – water is enough, and with epoxies alcohol or a thin film of vaseline works better. A wetted silicone tip glides over putty and leaves a smooth surface. Wash the tools in soap and lukewarm water afterwards to extend their life.

What is the difference between the white and black tips?
White is medium hardness, black is harder. The softer one smooths better and makes gradual transitions; the harder one gives more resistance, so it holds a sharp groove and carves deeper detail.

Can they be used with paint?
Not for ordinary painting – silicone does not carry paint the way bristle does. For spreading thick oil glazes and pastes, though, yes, and there they beat a brush because they leave no hair marks.
