Steel from the Ionic Smart Colors range – a steel metallic for weapons, armour and machinery. Matt 20 ml acrylic.

Steel is a mid steel metallic with a subtle rather than a shouting sheen. It is the main metal tone of the ladder – darker and more realistic than silver, so on weapons and armour it reads as actual metal rather than as decoration.

Frequently asked questions

When do I use Steel and when Silver?
Steel for surfaces, Silver for edges. A whole weapon in silver looks like foil – realistic metal is usually darker than people expect.

How do I paint chipping on armour?
With the tip of a brush or a piece of sponge, put Steel only on edges and raised areas over the painted colour. Chips appear where armour rubs – not randomly across the surface.

How do I thin this paint?
With water or an Ionic thinner. The formula is self-hydrating, so it stays workable on the palette far longer than ordinary acrylics – a drop is enough for brush work, and roughly 1 : 1 for airbrush.

Is the finish really matt?
Yes, it dries matt with no shiny patches. If the figure is going on the gaming table, seal it with a matt varnish at the end.
